Will-Power

I’ve been spending quite a bit of time in Romans 6:6–18, looking at what it means to “live in victory.”

From verse 11 onwards, Paul starts giving what sound like commands: Reckon yourselves to be dead to sin and alive to God. Do not let sin reign in your mortal body. Do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness. Present yourselves to God.

And my question has been a very simple one: How?

Because knowing what I should do and actually doing it are two very different things!

Last night, as I was thinking about this, I found myself wrestling with the uncomfortable truth that I don't have a strong enough willpower to live the Christian life the way Paul describes it.

And then a thought came to me that stopped me in my tracks - I don't need willpower.

I need to bring my will, and God supplies the power!

And maybe that's what Paul is getting at. God doesn't ask me to manufacture the power to live the life He calls me to live.

He asks me to make the choice. To reckon. To refuse. To present. To yield.

The will is mine.

The power is His.

And now, “How?” doesn't seem quite such an impossible question.
