If God Loves Me, Why Don’t I Feel It?

Jesus loves me this I know, for the Bible tells me so

This is a topic that has been a hot debate among Christians for centuries – If God really does love me, why don’t I feel loved? And it’s a very good and very valid question that has I think, a multifaceted answer. So lets dive in and see what we come up with.

I’ll start with a story. Just yesterday, I was talking online with a friend, when I saw a Meerkat dart across my lawn. He darted. Stopped. Looked around fearfully. Darted. Stopped. Look around….. I think you get it. He was very alert and very afraid. And with good reason. We have Eagles nesting not far from my home and they regularly fly over my property looking for food. So this Meerkat must have known there are Eagles in the area.

So lets look at what was going on inside the Meerkats brain. He knows there are Eagles and he knows that he is good prey. So when he is out of his burrow, whats the main thing on his mind? No, food is secondary. The main thing on his mind is to avoid getting caught by an Eagle that he knows is there. In his mind the Eagle is overhead all the time just waiting to dive down and grab him. So he is 24/7 alert and aware or in other words, conscious of the Eagle. And the truth is, the more he thinks about the Eagle, the bigger and scarier it gets in his mind.

Now you’re asking, what on earth does a scared Meerkat have to do with God loving me but I don’t feel it? Well, it works like this. The Bible tells us certain things about God. One of those things is that he is omnipresent. That a big word! It simply means that God is everywhere all the time. Yes, God is everywhere, all the time! Even right there with you while you’re reading this. But we have to become like the Meerkat – develop a God consciousness just like the Meerkat has developed and Eagle consciousness.

Because the reality is that the more we think, focus and meditate on God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit and the Bible, the more we will be conscious of the presence of God. The real answer lies in Isaiah 26:3 You will keep him in perfect peace, Whose mind is stayed on You, Because he trusts You. Lets substitute a name there. I’ll use my name. You (God) will keep Mark in perfect peace, because Marks mind is stayed or focused on You (God), because Mark trusts You (God). See that? The more my mind is focused on God, the more I experience the peace that He promises, regardless of my circumstances.

To me, this is how I experience Gods love for me. When I am focused on Him and in my daily life, I keep thanking Him, asking for guidance and advice, I have peace in my heart. The more I get to know God through prayer and study of the Word of God, the more I can walk with Him daily and the more I experience His peace. That is how God shows His love for you.

Of course, Gods ultimate demonstration of His love for You is that he sent His Son, Jesus, to die for you. And let me add this one in – if you were the only person on earth, Jesus would still have come to earth and died for You. Why? Because that is God’s character and demonstration of His love for You.

Don’t equate love with feelings. Feelings come and go depending on the time of day. But Gods peace is consistent. But You have to bring Gods peace into your life. God wants to give you His peace, but unless you reach out and take it from Him, you’re not going to have it at all.

So lets talk reality. The average Christian goes to church for about one hour a week. The other 166 hours of that same week, he or she is in the world and being influenced by the world. As a Christian, you need to make a conscious effort to fill your mind with God and His business. Because what you fill your mind with will govern your thoughts. Paul did not say in Romans 12:2, “Be transformed by the renewing of your mind” for nothing. He was saying that whatever occupies your mind, becomes your life.

The little Meerkat on my lawn taught me something important. He became conscious of what occupied his thoughts.

If Eagles occupy our thoughts, we become Eagle conscious.

If the world occupies our thoughts, we become world conscious.

But if God occupies our thoughts, we become God conscious.

And perhaps that is one answer to the question: If God loves me, why don't I feel it?

Maybe He is closer than I realise.

Maybe I simply need to spend more time looking at Him than looking at the Eagles.
