Social Media - Leader's friend or foe?

Social media plays a huge role in shaping how employees perceive management practices, sometimes more than we realize. It’s like having a digital watercooler—except now, it’s public, fast-moving, and often vastly amplified. Platforms like LinkedIn, Glassdoor, or even casual mentions on X, Instagram, TikTok or Facebook can quickly influence how employees view leadership decisions, company culture, and even individual managers.

One of the biggest factors is transparency—or the lack of it. In the past, management practices might have stayed behind closed doors, but now employees can (and do) share their experiences online.

If a company is praised for treating employees well—whether it’s flexibility, recognition, or values-driven leadership—it can enhance the perception of management in the company. But if the opposite happens, like poor communication during layoffs or unfair policies, social media can amplify those frustrations quickly, sometimes damaging trust internally and externally.

Take platforms like Glassdoor. Reviews of management styles can set the perceptions of prospective employees, shaping their expectations before they even set foot in the door. It’s not just about salaries; it’s about leadership behaviours, fairness, and values.

If employees feel heard, respected, and supported, they’ll often share that pride. If they feel undervalued or overlooked, well... that feedback can spread just as quickly.

There’s also the power of storytelling. Social media gives employees a platform to share their stories—good or bad - when managers lead with empathy or implement innovative new practices (like implementing flexible work hours or investing in team development), employees are more likely to highlight those moments. On the flip side, negative experiences can spark viral conversations, like we’ve seen with public reactions to poor management decisions at major companies.

Leaders today have to realize that perception isn’t just built inside the office—it’s shaped in real time by what employees post, share, and discuss. It’s why modern managers need to lead with authenticity and consistency.

If your actions align with your words and your values, employees will see it, feel it, and share it in a positive light. But if there’s a disconnect, social media will shine a spotlight on it, sometimes louder than you expect
