If You Want Real Performance from Your Team, Do This!
22 July 2025
High-performance management is all about creating an environment where people can consistently deliver their best. It's not about pushing people to the brink or setting impossible expectations - it’s about clarity, support, and accountability.
Let’s break it down in the way that we coach in our Management Made Easy program.
*Rule 1: Set Clear Expectations
People can’t hit a target they can’t see. High-performance starts with clarity. That means setting specific, descriptive, measurable goals and ensuring your team knows what success looks like.
Clarity also requires communication. You can’t assume people know what’s in your head. Ask them if they understand and let them ask questions.
*Rule 2: Play to Their Strengths
High-performance doesn’t happen when people are forced into roles that don’t fit. Part of your job as a manager is to know your team - their strengths, skills, and natural tendencies - and align their roles with what they’re good at. When you match people to tasks that play to their strengths, they’ll be more engaged and productive.
*Rule 3: Provide the Right Support
Even the most talented people can’t perform at their best if they don’t have the tools, training, or resources they need. High-performance management means removing barriers to success. That could be something as simple as streamlining a process or as complex as investing in professional development.
*Rule 4: Hold People Accountable
Accountability isn’t about punishment; it’s about ownership. High performers don’t shy away from accountability - they embrace it. But it starts with you, the manager. You need to model accountability by owning your decisions and following through on commitments.
For your team, accountability means regular check-ins, feedback, and ensuring everyone is pulling their weight. When someone falls short, have the tough conversation. It’s not about blame - it’s about helping them understand what went wrong and how they can improve.
When accountability is part of the culture, people naturally strive to do their best.
*Rule 5: Encourage a Culture of Continuous Improvement
High performance isn’t a destination; it’s a journey. Encourage your team to keep learning, experimenting, and finding ways to improve. Create an environment where it’s safe to fail, as long as you learn from it. The best teams are always looking for ways to get better, even when they’re already excelling.
As a manager, this means being open to feedback yourself. Ask your team, “What can I do better to support you?” and then act on their suggestions. When they see you improving, they’ll be inspired to do the same.
High-performance management is as much about relationships as it is about results. It’s about building trust, creating clarity, and ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
When you get this right, the results speak for themselves.
