Six Key Insights From Over 30 Years in Leadership Development
28 July 2025
After more than 30 years in leadership development, I’ve had the privilege of working with many leaders/managers across industries and organizations. Through these years, I’ve gathered a few key realizations that have shaped my understanding of leadership. Here are six important takeaways:
1) Leadership is About Courage, Self-Discipline, and Humility
Great leadership isn’t just about making decisions—it’s about having the courage to make tough choices, the self-discipline to stay consistent, and the humility to acknowledge that we don’t have all the answers. These qualities inspire trust and create an environment where teams thrive.
2) People Only Learn When They Want To or Need To
One thing I've learned is that learning happens when an individual is ready—whether out of desire or necessity. Leaders can guide and encourage, but the willingness to learn must come from within. Creating the right environment is key, but ultimately, it's about when the individual decides they’re ready to grow.
3) Leadership Is Not About Seniority, It’s About Respect and Influence
Leadership isn't tied to rank—it's about earning respect and building influence. You don’t need a title to lead effectively. It’s about having the trust and admiration of others, regardless of where you fall in the hierarchy.
4) You Can Lead Without Being a Manager, But You Can’t Manage Without Being a Leader
You don’t need to be a manager to be a leader, but every effective manager must also be a leader. Leadership is about guiding, motivating, and influencing others. Without it, even the best management strategies will fall flat.
5) If You’re a Manager and You’re Not the Leader, Someone Else Is!
This is a critical point: if you’re managing but not demonstrating leadership, someone else will naturally fill the void. Leadership isn't about having authority; it’s about taking responsibility and influencing others through action and example.
6) Influence, Not a Change Management Program, Is the Key to Change
The most powerful force for change is influence. Change happens not through programs or policies, but through the trust and respect leaders build. True change is driven by influence—leaders who inspire, motivate, and engage their teams create lasting transformation.
In leadership, influence is the true super-power. Whether you're in a formal position or not, it's the way you lead and inspire others that truly defines your impact. Leadership is not a one-time act—it’s a journey of constant growth and the ability to influence and inspire those around you.
